Austin named Number Two City in U.S. for STEM Professionals

DowntownAustinLady Bird Lake 2Austin long has been known as a tech center, and now WalletHub has named Texas’ capital city as the second top city in the nation for STEM professionals – those in science, technology, engineering, and math professions. Austin also had the fifth highest percentage of workers in STEM jobs compared to other U.S. cities. WalletHub analyzed the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S. with metrics such as job openings per capita for STEM graduates, annual median wage growth for STEM jobs, and the projected number of STEM jobs needed in 2018. Nationally, STEM professions are expected to expand 1.7 times faster than non-STEM occupations between 2008 and 2018, according to Department of Commerce estimates. The average STEM wage was $79,640 in 2013, 71 percent more than the national average.
